Direct-Fit Cat — Small Petrol

Three-way catalyst

SwiftCelerioS-PressoAltoIgnis
  • Bolt-in replacement for the small hatch engines — no cutting or welding needed
  • Buying used, insist on looking inside: gutted shells are common and worthless
  • A P0420 code, a rotten-egg smell or a failed emissions check is what brings people here

Priced against your VIN, because two of these that look identical often are not.

Manifold-Integrated Cat

Catalyst cast into the manifold

SwiftBalenoIgnisDzire
  • On several Suzuki engines the catalyst sits inside the exhaust manifold casting
  • That makes the cat and the manifold one component, quoted and replaced as one
  • Check which layout you have before ordering — it changes the job entirely

Priced against your VIN, because two of these that look identical often are not.

Direct-Fit Cat — Larger Petrol

Three-way catalyst

ErtigaVitaraGrand VitaraSX4Jimny
  • Larger substrate for the MPV, crossover and 4x4 engines
  • Older Grand Vitara and SX4 donor supply is thinner, so allow sourcing time
  • Confirm whether your car runs one catalyst or two before ordering anything

Priced against your VIN, because two of these that look identical often are not.

Universal Weld-In Cat

Universal · weld-in

SwiftAltoCelerioIgnis
  • The budget route for an older car that needs to pass a roadworthy
  • Not a bolt-on — an exhaust shop cuts the old one out and welds this in
  • Lower-grade units can struggle to clear a lambda fault, so ask before committing

Priced against your VIN, because two of these that look identical often are not.

Lambda / Oxygen Sensors

Upstream · downstream

SwiftCelerioBalenoErtigaJimnyVitara
  • A lazy downstream sensor throws a cat fault code on a perfectly healthy converter
  • Upstream and downstream sensors are different parts — say which position you need
  • Always worth eliminating before you buy a converter

Priced against your VIN, because two of these that look identical often are not.

We do not publish figures for these. A used unit is priced on the donor vehicle it came out of, so the honest answer only exists once we know which car yours is — which is why every button on this page asks for your details rather than showing you a number we made up.

Buying a Catalytic Converter for a Petrol Suzuki

Two things send Suzuki owners looking for a converter: the car has failed an emissions test or thrown a catalyst efficiency code, or somebody cut the old one off in a car park. Converter theft is a serious problem in South Africa because the substrate carries platinum, palladium and rhodium, and a thief with a cordless grinder needs very little time under a small hatch. If yours was stolen, fit a shield or cage along with the replacement rather than waiting to fund a second one.

Before buying, establish two things. The first is whether your engine uses a separate bolt-on converter or one cast into the exhaust manifold, because on several Suzuki engines they are a single component and the job is completely different. The second is whether the converter is genuinely the problem at all — a tired downstream lambda sensor will report a catalyst fault on a healthy cat, and an unresolved misfire will destroy a brand-new converter within weeks by dumping raw fuel into it. Fix the cause first. If you are buying used, insist on looking into the inlet: hollowed-out shells with the substrate already removed are common, and one will neither clear the fault nor pass a test. Sorting the wider exhaust system at the same time is usually worth it, and if the fault arrived with a running problem get us to look at the engine as well.
