Differential Assembly for a Suzuki β read this before you order
Suzuki fields three quite different automatics locally β a conventional torque-converter automatic, a CVT, and the AMT automated manual used on the budget cars. The AMT is a manual gearbox with an actuator bolted to it, so its parts have nothing in common with either of the others despite all three being sold as "auto". Getting that wrong is the most expensive mistake on this page.
In plain terms, the call you have to make is whether a repair, a reconditioned unit or a good used gearbox represents the best value on a car of this age β and the model name on the boot lid is not enough information to make it.
Include whether the car is manual, AMT, CVT or a conventional automatic, plus which engine sits in front of it when you ask us about differential assembly. Two questions up front beats a part that has to be couriered back.
Differential Assembly, explained
A differential lets the driven wheels turn at different speeds through a corner while still sharing drive between them. Where it lives depends on which Suzuki you have. On the front-wheel-drive cars, from the Swift and Baleno to the Dzire, Ignis, S-Presso, Celerio, Ertiga and Fronx, the diff is not a separate unit: it sits inside the gearbox casing, driven off the final drive, and it is serviced as part of the gearbox. A Jimny is the opposite arrangement, with a live axle front and rear, a crown wheel and pinion in a housing at each end, and a two-speed transfer case between them.
That difference decides how you buy. A Jimny diff is a physical assembly you can source, inspect and swap on its own; a Swift diff generally arrives inside a gearbox. Gravel, water crossings and a neglected oil change are what kill the axle version, because diff oil works hard and is rarely checked.

Suzuki Differential Assembly β questions we get asked
What decides which differential assembly fits my Suzuki?
Suzuki fields three quite different automatics locally β a conventional torque-converter automatic, a CVT, and the AMT automated manual used on the budget cars. The AMT is a manual gearbox with an actuator bolted to it, so its parts have nothing in common with either of the others despite all three being sold as "auto". Getting that wrong is the most expensive mistake on this page. In practice the decision in front of you is whether a repair, a reconditioned unit or a good used gearbox represents the best value on a car of this age.
What do you need from me to quote differential assembly?
Whether the car is manual, AMT, CVT or a conventional automatic, plus which engine sits in front of it. With that we can usually confirm the right part quickly, and we'll tell you whether we're quoting new, aftermarket or good used rather than leaving you to guess.
Is that whine the diff or a wheel bearing?
Load it and listen. A wheel bearing changes note when you sweep the car left and right at a steady speed, because you are shifting weight on and off it. A differential changes note when you swap between pulling and coasting at the same road speed. If the noise ignores your steering but reacts to the throttle, look at the diff.
Can the crown wheel and pinion be replaced without changing the whole housing?
They can, but the setup is skilled work. Pinion depth, backlash and bearing preload all have to be measured and shimmed correctly, and a set that is out by a fraction will howl within a few thousand kilometres. Many owners find a good complete second-hand assembly is faster and more predictable. List your model year and gearbox type in the quote form and we will cost both options.
My Swift has a whine that sounds like a diff. Do I need a whole gearbox?
Quite possibly. On the front-wheel-drive models the differential and final drive live inside the gearbox, so a worn diff bearing means opening the box. Once you count the strip, parts and rebuild time, a known-good used gearbox is often the practical answer.
Does the ratio matter on a Jimny?
It matters completely. Front and rear differentials must run the same ratio or the transfer case and driveline will fight each other every time four-wheel drive is engaged. Never mix an axle from a different derivative on ratio alone. Give us the VIN and we will match the exact part.
How often should differential oil be changed?
Follow the interval in your service book rather than a number off the internet, and shorten it if the car works hard. Deep water crossings can push water past a breather or seal, and heavy dust finds its way in through a tired pinion seal, so an axle that lives on gravel deserves an oil check more often than the book assumes.
