ECU/PCM for a Suzuki β read this before you order
Suzuki's SA range spans cars built more than fifteen years apart, and the electrical architecture is where that gap shows most. An early Alto or SX4 is largely conventional wiring; the current Swift, Fronx and mild-hybrid Grand Vitara carry coded modules that expect to be matched and configured. Which end of that range your car sits at changes what "a working second-hand one" even means.
In plain terms, the call you have to make is whether the part itself has failed or something upstream of it has, because a replacement fitted to a bad circuit will fail in exactly the same way β and the model name on the boot lid is not enough information to make it.
Include the year and derivative, plus any fault code the scanner has already produced when you ask us about ecu/pcm. Two questions up front beats a part that has to be couriered back.
ECU/PCM, explained
The engine control unit reads the sensors, from crank position and air temperature to throttle angle and exhaust oxygen, and decides fuelling, ignition timing and idle. It rarely dies of old age. When one does fail it is nearly always water ingress, a jump-start connected backwards, or a shorted injector or coil taking a driver stage with it.

Does a replacement ECU need to be coded?
On any modern car with an immobiliser, yes. The unit has to be married to the immobiliser data and the keys before the engine will run, and that is a job for someone with the right diagnostic equipment. Factor that cost in when you compare a second-hand unit against a repair.
Can I fit a used ECU from the same model?
Only if the part number matches. The same body shell can be sold with different engines, manual and automatic gearboxes and different emissions equipment, and each combination gets its own software. Send your VIN through the quote form and we will check the number against your car rather than guessing from the model name.
How do I know it is really the ECU and not the wiring?
Most suspected ECU faults turn out to be supply and earth problems. Check the main earth points on the block and body for corrosion, confirm the ignition-switched feed and the permanent feed at the connector, and inspect the loom where it passes the scuttle. Coastal humidity attacks earth points hard, and a bad earth can mimic almost any electronic fault.
Can a water-damaged unit be repaired?
Sometimes. If water has only tracked onto the board and the corrosion is caught early, a specialist can clean it, replace damaged components and reflow the joints, and that keeps your original coding. Once the copper tracks themselves have been eaten away, the repair stops being economical.
What causes ECU failure most often?
Reverse polarity from a hurried jump-start is the classic one. Welding on the car without disconnecting the battery is another. Beyond that, blocked scuttle drains letting water into the plenum area, and a failing coil or injector that shorts and pulls the output stage down with it.
