The questions we ask before we price internal clutches
Suzuki fields three quite different automatics locally β a conventional torque-converter automatic, a CVT, and the AMT automated manual used on the budget cars. The AMT is a manual gearbox with an actuator bolted to it, so its parts have nothing in common with either of the others despite all three being sold as "auto". Getting that wrong is the most expensive mistake on this page.
In plain terms, the call you have to make is whether a repair, a reconditioned unit or a good used gearbox represents the best value on a car of this age β and the model name on the boot lid is not enough information to make it.
Include whether the car is manual, AMT, CVT or a conventional automatic, plus which engine sits in front of it when you ask us about internal clutches. Two questions up front beats a part that has to be couriered back.
Internal Clutches, explained
Internal clutches are the multi-plate clutch packs inside an automatic gearbox. Hydraulic pressure squeezes steel and friction plates together to lock up a gearset. When the friction material wears thin or the pressure drops away, the pack slips and the engine revs climb without the car actually pulling.

Suzuki Internal Clutches FAQs
What decides which internal clutches fits my Suzuki?
Suzuki fields three quite different automatics locally β a conventional torque-converter automatic, a CVT, and the AMT automated manual used on the budget cars. The AMT is a manual gearbox with an actuator bolted to it, so its parts have nothing in common with either of the others despite all three being sold as "auto". Getting that wrong is the most expensive mistake on this page. In practice the decision in front of you is whether a repair, a reconditioned unit or a good used gearbox represents the best value on a car of this age.
What do you need from me to quote internal clutches?
Whether the car is manual, AMT, CVT or a conventional automatic, plus which engine sits in front of it. With that we can usually confirm the right part quickly, and we'll tell you whether we're quoting new, aftermarket or good used rather than leaving you to guess.
Does my Suzuki even have internal clutches?
It depends entirely on which gearbox you have, and the range covers several. A torque-converter automatic runs clutch packs. The AGS automated manual works an ordinary single dry clutch with an actuator instead of a pedal, so there are no packs in it. A CVT drives through a belt and pulleys with its own forward and reverse clutch arrangement. Tell us the derivative and we will confirm what is in yours.
Will an oil and filter change stop the slipping?
It is worth doing early, when the fluid is dark and the slip is only occasional, because degraded fluid loses the friction properties the packs depend on. Once the friction material has actually worn off the plates, no fluid will bring it back and you are into a strip-down.
Used gearbox or rebuild?
A rebuild by a gearbox specialist replaces the clutch packs, seals and worn hydraulics, so you know what you have. A used unit is cheaper and quicker but carries whatever history it came with unless it was tested before removal. Ask what testing was done and decide from there rather than on price alone.
What wears these clutches out on a small car?
Heat, mostly. Crawling in Johannesburg and Pretoria peak traffic keeps the converter working hard with little airflow through the cooler, and towing beyond what the car was designed for does the same in minutes rather than hours. Old fluid then loses its ability to carry that heat away and the decline accelerates.
What information do you need to quote on gearbox parts?
The gearbox code matters more than the model name here, because a single model can be sold with a manual, an automated manual and a torque-converter automatic across its life. The VIN is what pins that down, so send it through with your enquiry.

Not sure which internal clutches your Suzuki takes?
Whether the car is manual, AMT, CVT or a conventional automatic, plus which engine sits in front of it is all we need. We cross-reference it against what we can source and come back with what fits.
