Suzuki Steering Wheel β€” Sourced to Your Derivative

Choosing steering wheel usually comes down to whether the replacement has to be an exact trim match, or whether a near-equivalent lifted from a different spec of the same car will do the job. Send the details and we'll come back with Suzuki Swift used spares, matched to your car

Used, aftermarket and reconditioned parts. Not supplied by Suzuki Auto South Africa.

Why two identical-looking Suzukis take different steering wheel

What you are really deciding
Whether the replacement has to be an exact trim match, or whether a near-equivalent lifted from a different spec of the same car will do the job.
Where Suzuki differs
Interior parts are where Suzuki's sibling models diverge most. The XL6 and the Ertiga share the mechanical package but not the seating; the Eeco is sold in panel and passenger form with different rear layouts; and entry derivatives across the range go without the mounting provision that higher specs assume is there.
Where the car was built
Something worth knowing about this marque in particular: a large share of the Suzuki range sold in South Africa is built by Maruti Suzuki in India, while the Jimny comes out of Japan. Cars that look the same on the road can therefore sit on different supply chains, which is one reason we would rather check than assume.
What to send us
The derivative, the trim colour, and confirmation that the car left the factory with the feature you are replacing. With that in front of us we can normally settle the right steering wheel without a back-and-forth.

Steering Wheel, explained

A steering wheel is a safety assembly, not a trim item. Inside the boss sits the driver airbag module, and behind that the clock spring β€” a coiled flat ribbon cable that keeps the horn, the airbag circuit and the audio buttons connected while the wheel turns. Higher trims add a multifunction wheel with audio and phone controls on the spokes, and tilt adjustment is listed as standard on the Swift.

Rims wear where hands sit and where the sun lands. A car parked outside all day on the Highveld cooks the top of the rim through the windscreen, so leather or urethane there hardens and splits long before the rest. If you are replacing the wheel, treat the airbag as a separate decision β€” the module is a pyrotechnic device and belongs to a workshop that knows the disarming procedure.

How you know steering wheel are on the way out

Airbag warning light on constantly after the wheel was disturbed
Horn works only at one point in the wheel travel
Audio or cruise buttons dead on one spoke
Rim leather split along the seam, or gone shiny and hard at the grip points
Clicking from behind the boss as the wheel is turned lock to lock
Wheel sitting off-centre while the car tracks perfectly straight

Recognise any of that? Tell us the model and year and we will go and check what we can get hold of for you.

What customers ask about steering wheel

What decides which steering wheel fits my Suzuki?

Interior parts are where Suzuki's sibling models diverge most. The XL6 and the Ertiga share the mechanical package but not the seating; the Eeco is sold in panel and passenger form with different rear layouts; and entry derivatives across the range go without the mounting provision that higher specs assume is there. In practice the decision in front of you is whether the replacement has to be an exact trim match, or whether a near-equivalent lifted from a different spec of the same car will do the job.

What do you need from me to quote steering wheel?

The derivative, the trim colour, and confirmation that the car left the factory with the feature you are replacing. With that we can usually confirm the right part quickly, and we'll tell you whether we're quoting new, aftermarket or good used rather than leaving you to guess.

Can I fit a multifunction wheel to a car that came with a plain one?

Sometimes, but it is not a bolt-on. The buttons need a loom, the right clock spring with the extra circuits, and a head unit that understands the signals. On some builds that wiring is already behind the trim and on others it is simply absent. List your model year and trim on the quote form and we will confirm the spoke layout.

What is the clock spring and why does it fail?

It is a flat ribbon cable coiled inside a housing behind the wheel, and it keeps the horn, the airbag and the wheel buttons connected while the wheel rotates. It fails because that ribbon flexes every time you steer, for years. The symptom pattern gives it away β€” horn out, buttons dead, airbag light on, often all three at once.

Is it safe to buy a used wheel with the airbag still in it?

Only from someone who will tell you the history of the car it came off. An airbag module is a pyrotechnic device with a service life, and one out of a car that has had a frontal impact must not be reused even if it looks untouched. Have it fitted by a workshop that follows the disarming procedure rather than doing it on a driveway.

Why has the rim gone hard and shiny?

Sun and hands. A car standing outside all day cooks the upper rim through the windscreen until the plasticiser comes out of the covering and it goes brittle and cracks. The underside, where your hands rest, wears smooth instead. A trimmer can re-cover a wheel where the exact part is hard to find.

The wheel is off-centre. Is the wheel itself the problem?

Rarely. An off-centre wheel on a car that tracks straight nearly always means the tie rods were adjusted unevenly at the last alignment, or something in the steering has shifted since. Have the alignment done properly first, because pulling the wheel off and refitting it a spline over only hides the real fault.
